COURSE OVERVIEW: This weekend is all about maximum time in the air, on the snow and apres. As soon as you’re off the plane in Geneva, our team will usher you to your private helicopter – then fly direct to the French / Italian border where your heliskiing / boarding adventure will begin, whilst your luggage is delivered to your hotel. Two days heliskiing; a third day off-piste with your instructor; 2 nights in a hotel in Val d’Isere or Courchevel; tables booked at La Folie Douce; beach bar l’Ouillette; le Cap Horn, rosé on the terrace of The Brussels and an impressive 27 minute door-to-door helicopter transfer from resort to Geneva airport, for a 6pm flight back to London, in time for Sunday dinner. Heliski descents could be in either Courmayeur, Valgrisenche or the Col Du Petit st Bernard depending on time of year; snow conditions and groups preferences. GQ’s writer, Simon Mills, enjoying a two drop day with Val Heliski

SAMPLE COURSE ITINERARY:
Friday 6:45 – 9:20 AM:
Catch an early suggested British Airways flight from London Heathrow (or an alternative flight of a similar time).

9:45 AM: You’ll be met by our team in Geneva airport where you’ll change into your ski gear and the rest of your luggage will be taken to your hotel in Val D’Isere (or Courchevel).

10:15 AM: A circa 27 minute flight time by private helicopter over the French / Italian boarder into the Heliski area known as Col du Petit St Bernard where we land. Meet your local Italian UIAGM Mountain guide; get briefed and kitted up with your safety equipment and partake in a  ski / snowboard assessment.

10:30 AM: First descent – This is one of 3 of our heliskiing areas – Mainly long, wide open bowls and entry level gradient descents to warm up slowly but with the opportunity for steeper stuff, if the guide feels confident of the group’s ability. Descent length ranges up to around 2500 vertical meters, taking between 1-2 hours per descent. Refer to our “Where we operate” map in the Multiday packages page for further information on our possible descents.

12.30 PM: Straight onto a second drop ending further into the Italian backcountry with a helicopter out and back into France (your third country of the weekend).

2:30 PM: Helicopter back to the base of Val d’Isere’s famous La Folie Douce where your table at La Fruitiere restaurant will await you and the banging music of La Folie Douce is beckoning (extra drops can be booked on the day).

SATURDAY 9:00 AM: You’ll begin the day meeting your instructor and riding the Val d’Isere lifts to the summit, followed by a shallow gradient hike of between 20-45 mins. This descent is a technique challenger, rather than powder hunting, with a large variety of terrain, snow conditions and epic views of Tignes Dam. A long descent of around 1700 vertical meters including couloirs; bowls and trees finished with a helicopter pick-up landing at the top of Val d’Isere for lunch at beach bar restaurant l’Ouillette.

1.00 PM: After lunch you spend the afternoon exploring the off piste with your instructor including some off piste technique tips and pointers in preparation for tomorrow’s heliski.

4:30 PM: We suggest a glass of rosé at Hotel le Brussels or a beer at Cafe Face before returning back to your hotel.

SUNDAY 9:30 AM: Helicopter from Val d’Isere helipad to Valgrisenche or Courmayeur (dictated by best snow conditions). Your day includes two helidrops, of up to 2500 vertical meters per descent, with lunch on the mountain. Courmayeur and Valgrisenche are a step up in terms of terrain available, ability level required and the epic backcountry scenery; likened to a snow generic synthroid safari. Extra drops can be booked on the day.

4:00 PM: The helicopter will take you back to Geneva airport where you’ll be met by our team and your luggage.

6:00 PM: Take a British Airway’s flight back to London, in time for Sunday dinner (or an alternative flight of a similar time).

COURSE OVERVIEW: Designed for skiers / snowboarders comfortable on blue-to-red run gradient off-piste wanting to experience the thrill of heliskiing, at their own pace. You’ll get the chance to try out our partner’s Salomon / Liberty’s powder skis and learn how to use them under the instruction of your UIAGM mountain guide. You’ll be trained on the safety equipment we provide.

The day will start with a gentle warm up, on and off-piste to the heli take off zone on the French / Italian boarder where you’ll meet your UIAGM Italian mountain guide, carry out transceiver training and an avalanche rescue training simulation before embarking on your heli descent that takes between one to two hours of ski / snowboard time (around 2000 vertical meters of descent). Extra descents can be bought on the day if desired. Heliski descents could be in either Courmayeur, Valgrisenche or the Col Du Petit st Bernard depending on time of year; snow conditions and groups preferences. Christmas and New Year heliskiing locations are limited and may require a further ski and minibus to access the heli bases.

Why not read our blog on A beginner’s Guide To Heliskiing Or our FAQ page if you have any more queries.

SAMPLE COURSE ITINERARY:
8:00 AM:
VHS minibus will pick you up in Val d’Isere / Tignes (7:15 if staying in Courchevel / Meribel) and a drive to la Rosiere.

8:45 AM: On arrival at La Rosiere any pre-booked Salomon / Liberty VHS powder skis will be fitted as well as safety kit fitting and briefing.

9:00 AM: Your VHS staff member will get you to the French / Italian border, via a gentle on / off-piste warm up, to meet your UIAGM mountain guide at the heli take off zone.

10:30 AM: Guide carries out a further on/off-piste warm up and verifies off piste ability level before the heliski. Technique and pointers on off piste skiing / snowboarding will be given.

11:00 AM: Begin your heli-descent of up to 2000 vertical metres, with plenty of opportunity to stop for technique tips on backcountry riding, a breather and to take in the epic scenery and wildlife. There’ll be frequent rests on “Islands of Safety” to allow skiers to regroup frequently but descend with plenty of space between them for best practice procedure. Descents of more than a 25 degree gradient (steep red run equivalent) will be avoided where possible to eliminate slab avalanche risk. (Refer to “where we operate” map on the “heliskiing packages page” for details of possible descents.)

12:30 PM:  Stop for a mountain restaurant lunch (not included) or pre-ordered VHS packed lunch.

1.30 PM: Your UIAGM guide will take you around some of the piste and off-piste of La Thuile including tree runs (depending on groups ability), whilst giving further technique pointers.

Ste Foy – A Hidden Gem

The best of both worlds.

That’s what you get in Sainte Foy.

This little town, often overlooked as a holiday destination, has a lot to offer.
Ste Foy ski resort has been designed to recreate a typical alpine village. The chalets that nestle amongst the trees in their south-west-facing bowl have all been built in traditional style, with pitched roofs and wooden balconies, using local stone and wood.

It’s neighbouring resorts, such as Tignes and Val d’Isere, are bustling tourist honeypot sites, well known for their skiing. More often than not they’re the regarded as the best resorts in the Tarentaise area. However, what if I told you Sainte Foy was just as good?

Not only does St Foy offer a traditional alpine resort feel, it also offers some amazing ski terrain… If you know where to look. Fortunately, we do!

The Fogliette backcountry run is one of our favourites. After buy propecia no prescription taking the Col de l’Aguille chairlift there’s a short walk to reach the start of this beautiful off-piste run. The north-facing slope has plenty of fun and challenging aspects, including; cliff drops, powder fields and steeps. Val Heliski offer many packages from Ste Foy that you can see here: http://valheliski.com/packages-2/

It’s not just the skiing that makes Saint Foy great. There’s so much more to this resort.
From River-rafting to archery, hiking to horse-riding Sainte Foy has it all. Although, I’ve only scratched the surface, you can see a total list of activities here: http://www.saintefoy-tarentaise.com/english/category/activities/

However, If this all becomes too much for you, there are two spas to help you unwind, multiple walking routes in the local area, or you could take a trip over to the cheese maker to taste some of the unique cheeses they make.
